Week 7 and a half
Week starting 4/11/24
Monday I continued excavating the section of the 'wall' rock feature, we have now just been calling it the stone linear feature. We are reasonably confident it was some type of wall, possibly defensive but definitely marking a boundary. Naomi and Mark continued their excavation of the mine shaft, after a couple of days they had got too deep again so had to stop for health and safety reasons. The stone linear is deeper in the middle of the section, changing from a darker more silty clay, containing the stones, down to a firmer, brighter orange clay. Naomi moved on to another pit feature a few metres away from the previous feature I had excavated (the irregular bunch of large stones), it appeared to be the same thing and join up with it, making it likely that it is natural.
Thursday the 7th, the digger driver, from the quarry, came to remove more limestone bedrock from the flint mine in area 1A so another shaft could be more accessible to further excavate. We spent the rest of the morning cleaning the broken bedrock away from the shaft area, we didn't finish because the digger returned to clear more bedrock. I remember this morning well - Donald Trump had just won the Presidential election over Kamala Harris so I was listening to the live updates on the radio, which was pretty depressing. The day dragged on and spent the afternoon on the first section of the stone linear.
Friday was more of the same, including the grey and wet weather. The work in my section got too tight to have Sarah and I in it so I moved to box 3, another section of the stone linear that Prianca and Garge are excavating. I began on the other side of the section and had the large surface level stones to deal with. We made good progress through the day but have a tight schedule and need to be done with area 2A by Tuesday, including drawing and logging everything.
It was a long and tiring week at work, hopefully I can regain some more motivation for next week. I finish writing this on Sunday, after an interesting night out on Saturday and just before Arsenal vs Chelsea kicks off. An important game!
